During the beginning of the Ming Dynasty in ancient China, a peasant boy named Hu Wan lives a simple life farming with his grandfather. They would carve utensils and ware out of gourds to sell in the village market. In spring, one gourd is chosen to be carefully moulded and at maturity made into a cricket cage. This year, Hu Wan gets the honour of carving the design on the special gourd.
Judy Young's Hu Wan and the Sleeping Dragon isn't a story about a mythical beast; it's a story about compassion and kindness. Hu Wan is hard working and caring; an easily likable character which makes the ending very gratifying. This uplifting and inspiring tale is complemented by Jordi Solano's delicate illustrations. Soft lines and muted colours, the tranquil life of farmers is portrayed in rustic style and misty tones. Recommended for ages 6+.
