Edmund Dulac's Exquisite Illustrations for Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper

Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) is one of the foremost artists during the Golden Age of Illustration. Born in Toulouse, France, he moved to London, England in 1905 to illustrate the collected works of the Brontë sisters; his first commission. He studied Law at the University of Toulouse but his real passion was painting. He won several art competitions at the École des Beaux Arts. Some of his finest works were for Hodder & Stoughton and Leicester Galleries; these illustrations were published in deluxe children’s books. One of those titles is The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch published in 1910. It also contains three other stories: Cinderella, Bluebeard, and Beauty & the Beast. Reproductions of this book can be found through the links below. Warwick Goble Illustrates Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales: The Cold Lady, The Ghost of Oyuki

Author Grace Edith Marion James (1882-1965) was an English writer of children’s books and a Japanese folklorist. Born in Japan, she spent part of her childhood years there. Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales was first published in 1910 by Macmillan and later reissued as Japanese Fairy Tales and as Moon Maiden and Other Japanese Fairy Tales. Grace James is also known for writing the John and Mary children’s series.

English artist Warwick Goble (1862-1943) trained at the City of London School and the Westminster School of Art. He illustrated many books for MacMillan publishers, most notably Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales, The Complete Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Stories from the Pentamerone, Folk Tales of Bengal, The Water Babies, and The Fairy Books by Andrew Lang. His medium of choice is watercolour and he is a prominent artist during the Golden Age of illustration.

The Cold Lady is a fairy tale for older children and adults. It is one of thirty-eight short stories within this book which includes forty coloured illustrations.

One of the Earliest Versions of Little Red Riding Hood with Wood Engravings by Walter Crane

We’ll begin our first story with one of the most well-known fairy tales, Little Red Riding Hood also known as Little Red Cap or Red Riding Hood. The origin of this story is unclear. Charles Perrault wrote his version in 1697 and much later Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm adapted their version in 1812. The popularity of these two variations of the story would make it appear to have European origins however, a Chinese poet named Huang Zhing also penned his version during the 17th century. Our video features illustrations by Walter Crane (1845-1915) from a book published in 1875 by George Routledge & Sons. We’ve modernized the text and hope you enjoy it!
